Hybrid programs by city
What is a hybrid homeschool?
A hybrid homeschool blends part-time campus instruction with parent-led learning at home. Students attend one to three days a week for core subjects taught by trained teachers - often with a strong Christian worldview - then complete the rest of their work at home where a parent coaches and supervises. The model is also called a university-model school or two-day-a-week school.
Why Arizona families choose hybrids
Hybrids give families community, accountability, and trained instruction without a full five-day school commitment - and Arizona's universal ESA program can cover the full annual tuition at most approved hybrid programs.
Hybrid vs co-op vs microschool
| Model | Days/week | Who teaches | Parent role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Co-op | 1 day | Parents (sometimes hired teachers) | Onsite; teach or assist |
| Hybrid | 1-3 days | Trained teachers | At-home coach on off days |
| Microschool | 4-5 days | Trained teachers | Drop-off; minimal at-home work |
Frequently asked questions
- What is a hybrid homeschool?
- A hybrid homeschool blends part-time in-person instruction at a campus with parent-led learning at home. Students typically attend one to three days a week for core subjects taught by trained teachers, then complete the rest of their work at home with a parent acting as coach. The model is also called a university-model school or two-day-a-week school.
- Are Arizona hybrid programs covered by ESA?
- Many are. Arizona's Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) can pay tuition at hybrid programs that are approved ClassWallet vendors. Most Christian hybrid academies in Phoenix, Mesa, Gilbert, and Scottsdale accept ESA, often covering the full annual cost. Confirm vendor status with each program before enrolling.
- Do I still file a homeschool affidavit if my child attends a hybrid?
- It depends on how you pay. If you direct your child's education and choose the curriculum, you file an Affidavit of Intent to Homeschool under A.R.S. 15-802. If you pay with ESA funds, your signed ESA contract replaces the affidavit - you do not file both.
- Is a hybrid homeschool the same as a university-model school?
- Largely yes. University-model school is the most common formal name for the two- or three-day hybrid approach. Both terms describe campuses that share teaching responsibility with parents across in-person and at-home days.
- How much does a hybrid program cost in Arizona?
- Two-day-a-week Christian hybrid academies typically run $5,000 to $7,000 per year, including curriculum and materials. Lighter one-day or drop-off enrichment programs cost less. Arizona's roughly $7,000-$8,000 annual ESA award often covers the full tuition for eligible families.
- Hybrid vs co-op vs microschool - what's the difference?
- A co-op meets one day a week, is usually parent-led, and parents stay onsite. A hybrid meets one to three days, teachers lead instruction, and parents finish at home. A microschool is a small full-week school (four or five days) with 5-25 students per class. Hybrids sit between co-ops and microschools in time commitment and parent involvement.

Homeschooling and ESA-funded education are not the same thing
Under Arizona law these are two distinct pathways with different rules. We label every listing with the pathway it primarily serves so you know what you're signing up for.
Homeschooling (ARS §15-802)
Parent files an Affidavit of Intent. No public funds. Parent picks any curriculum and keeps full control. Co-ops, tutors, and enrichment are paid out of pocket.
ESA-funded education
Family signs the ESA contract and the affidavit is withdrawn. Quarterly funds flow through ClassWallet, expenses must fit ADE's allowable list, and receipts are required. Legally not homeschooling.
