How ESA pays a Christian co-op
ClassWallet Direct Pay
If the co-op is a registered ClassWallet vendor, request a Direct Pay from your ESA portal and tuition flows straight to the program. The fastest, cleanest path.
Reimbursement
If the co-op is not yet a ClassWallet vendor, you can often pay out of pocket and submit an itemized invoice plus proof of payment for reimbursement through your ESA account.
What's billable
Tuition, required class fees, lab supplies, and approved curriculum are typically eligible. Support-group dues, park-day fees, and voluntary donations are not. See the ESA-approved Bible curriculum guide for publisher specifics.
One key compliance note: once you sign your ESA contract you do not file an Affidavit of Intent to Homeschool - the ESA contract replaces it under Arizona law. Read the full Arizona ESA Guide for eligibility, deposit timing, and what ClassWallet won't cover.
What is a Christian homeschool co-op?
A homeschool co-op is a group of homeschooling families that meet together — usually one day a week — to share teaching, enrichment, and community. Christian co-ops are grounded in a biblical worldview: most open in prayer, integrate Scripture into instruction, and ask families to affirm a statement of faith. Parents remain the primary educators at home; the co-op fills in the subjects best taught in a group, like science labs, writing workshops, art, music, PE, and Bible.
Why Arizona families choose co-ops
Co-ops give homeschoolers consistent weekly community, hands-on classes that are hard to recreate at home, and a circle of like-minded families. With Arizona's universal ESA program, many co-op classes and curriculum costs are now reimbursable, making co-ops more accessible than ever.
What to look for in a co-op
- Statement of faith. Most Christian co-ops ask families to affirm core doctrines — see co-ops that require a statement of faith.
- Grade levels. Some co-ops serve K–5 only, others run a full K–12 program.
- Schedule and commitment. Most meet one day per week; a few meet two.
- ESA acceptance. Filter for co-ops that accept ESA if you're using Arizona's scholarship account.

Frequently asked questions
- What is a Christian homeschool co-op?
- A Christian homeschool co-op is a group of homeschooling families that meet regularly - usually once a week - to share teaching, enrichment classes, and community grounded in a biblical worldview. Parents typically remain the primary educators at home; the co-op supplements with subjects like science labs, writing, art, music, PE, and Bible.
- How often do co-ops meet?
- Most Arizona homeschool co-ops meet one day per week during the school year. A few meet two days per week or run shorter semester-based sessions. Each listing on this page shows the schedule the program reports.
- Which Arizona Christian co-ops accept ESA funds?
- Many of the listings on this page accept Arizona Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) funds for tuition, enrichment classes, and required curriculum. Featured ESA co-ops are highlighted above; additional ESA-accepting co-ops appear in the 'Accepts ESA' section and carry an ESA badge on their listing.
- How do I pay a co-op with ClassWallet?
- If the co-op is a registered ClassWallet vendor, you request a Direct Pay from your ESA portal and ClassWallet sends tuition straight to the program. If the co-op is not a registered vendor, you can often pay out of pocket and submit an itemized invoice plus proof of payment for reimbursement. Confirm vendor status with the co-op before enrolling.
- Can ESA cover co-op tuition AND curriculum at the same time?
- Yes. ESA funds can pay for eligible co-op tuition and the curriculum your student uses at home, as long as each expense is allowable under the current ESA handbook. Keep itemized receipts and avoid duplicate billing for the same materials.
- Do I still file a homeschool affidavit if I use ESA at a co-op?
- No. Once you sign your ESA contract you do not file an Affidavit of Intent to Homeschool - the ESA contract replaces it under Arizona law. If you already have an affidavit on file, contact your county superintendent about withdrawing it.
- What's the difference between an ESA-approved school and an ESA-billable co-op?
- An ESA-approved private or microschool is the family's full education provider and bills tuition directly through ClassWallet. A co-op typically supplements parent-led homeschooling one or two days a week; ESA can pay the co-op's tuition or class fees if the co-op is registered as a ClassWallet vendor, while the parent still directs the rest of the curriculum.
- How much do homeschool co-ops cost in Arizona?
- Costs vary widely. Volunteer-run church co-ops may charge $50-$300 per semester to cover supplies and facility fees. Larger teacher-led co-ops with more class options can run $1,000-$3,500+ per year. ESA funds often offset eligible tuition and class fees.
- Do parents have to stay during co-op?
- It depends on the co-op. Many require at least one parent to stay on-site and serve as a teacher, assistant, or nursery helper. Others are drop-off. Filter listings by 'Parent Required' or 'Drop-Off' to find what fits your family.
- Can I join a co-op mid-year?
- Some Arizona co-ops accept new families mid-year if space and class size allow; others run a single fall-to-spring enrollment. Contact the co-op directly from its listing to ask about openings, waitlists, and prorated tuition.
- Are support-group dues or park-day fees ESA-billable?
- Generally no. ESA funds cover structured academic instruction, required curriculum, and approved enrichment - not informal support-group dues or park-day fees. When in doubt, check the current ESA handbook or ask the program how their fees are categorized.

Know the difference
Homeschooling and ESA-funded education are not the same thing
Under Arizona law these are two distinct pathways with different rules. We label every listing with the pathway it primarily serves so you know what you're signing up for.
Homeschooling (ARS §15-802)
Parent files an Affidavit of Intent. No public funds. Parent picks any curriculum and keeps full control. Co-ops, tutors, and enrichment are paid out of pocket.
ESA-funded education
Family signs the ESA contract and the affidavit is withdrawn. Quarterly funds flow through ClassWallet, expenses must fit ADE's allowable list, and receipts are required. Legally not homeschooling.
