FeaturedElementary Writing Tutor
Helping Students Become Confident Readers and Writers I'm Kristi Wolch, M.Ed., founder of Elementary Writing Tutor. I provide one-on-one online reading and writing tutoring for students in grades 4–8, with a special focus on neurodiverse learners, including students with ADHD, autism, dyslexia traits, executive functioning challenges, and reluctant writers. I also support homeschool families who want extra guidance teaching reading and writing at home. Every child learns differently, so every lesson is personalized. Before instruction begins, I assess each student's strengths and areas of need, then create an individualized plan that builds skills step by step. Sessions combine explicit instruction, engaging activities, and plenty of encouragement so students gain both academic skills and confidence. Whether we're strengthening reading comprehension, improving sentence writing, organizing essays, building vocabulary, or mastering grammar, each lesson is designed to support student growth. My background includes more than 10 years as a special education classroom teacher, followed by over a decade of private tutoring. I also hold a master’s degree in special education from the University of Washington. Since 2015, I've worked with students both online and in person, helping children who struggle with reading and writing become more independent learners. I love finding creative ways to make challenging concepts manageable, especially for students who have begun to believe they "just aren't good at writing or reading." Families often tell me that their children not only improve academically but also become more willing to write, participate in reading activities, and tackle assignments independently. My goal is to help students develop the confidence, communication skills, and learning strategies that will serve them for years to come. I believe parents are valuable partners in the learning process, and I work hard to make sure they understand their child's progress and know how to support learning between sessions. My Christian faith is an important part of who I am and guides the way I serve others with kindness, integrity, and compassion. While faith is not the focus of tutoring, I am comfortable teaching with Christian curriculum and publishers when families request them. I always respect each family's preferences and follow their lead regarding faith-based discussions during lessons. If you're looking for a patient, experienced tutor who understands how to meet students where they are and help them grow, I'd love the opportunity to support your child in becoming a more confident, capable reader and writer.
FeaturedWrite Well Academy - College Esssay and Writing Tutor, Writing Professor
Hello, my students call me Ms. Kelly. I help students become stronger, more confident writers without taking over their work. My goal is to help students understand how writing works, find their own voice, and develop a process they can use again and again. I want them to leave tutoring with more than a finished assignment. I want them to know how to begin when stuck, organize ideas, revise thoughtfully, and trust themselves as writers. A typical week is shaped around the student rather than a rigid curriculum. We may work on a homeschool essay, prepare for AP English Language, strengthen grammar and sentence structure, practice literary or rhetorical analysis, develop research skills, or revise a college or scholarship essay. I keep the work focused and manageable, with clear next steps rather than a mountain of corrections. I work with students from middle school through college, including reluctant writers, advanced writers who need deeper feedback, and students who have struggled with traditional writing instruction. I also support families preparing for dual enrollment, AP courses, college-level writing, and the college application process. Parents are kept informed, while students are encouraged to take ownership of their work and become more independent. I teach writing as a process, not a formula. I have more than 25 years of experience teaching college writing and supporting developing writers. My background includes composition and rhetoric, AP English Language instruction and scoring, student success coaching, college essay coaching, and expressive writing. Write Well Academy offers flexible, individualized online instruction and is an approved Arizona ESA vendor. Each student’s work is built around current needs, family goals, academic plans, and long-term growth. If your student is preparing for college application season, I am happy to send you a free college essay workbook with no obligation.
Charlotte Mason isn't a workbook or a boxed curriculum — it's a philosophy of education that has quietly shaped Christian homeschooling for a century. If you've heard other moms talk about "living books," nature journals, or short lessons and wondered whether it's for your family, this is the plain-English guide.
We'll cover what the Charlotte Mason method actually is, whether it's inherently Christian, the curricula that follow it (free and paid), how it compares to classical and traditional homeschooling, and how Arizona ESA funds apply.
What Is the Charlotte Mason Method?
Charlotte Mason (1842-1923) was a British educator who believed children are born persons — full human beings, not empty buckets to fill. Her method rests on a few practical habits:
- Living books, not textbooks. Real literature written by authors passionate about the subject, in place of dry survey texts.
- Narration. After a reading, the child tells back what they heard in their own words. This replaces most worksheets and comprehension quizzes.
- Short lessons. 15-20 minutes for young children, 30-45 for older — pushing full attention, then stopping.
- Nature study. Weekly time outdoors observing and drawing plants, weather, birds, and insects.
- Copywork and dictation instead of endless grammar drills. Children copy well-written passages, then take them from dictation.
- A broad feast of subjects. History, geography, art, music, poetry, handicrafts, and a foreign language — not just the "three Rs."
- Habit training. Character formation treated as seriously as academics.
Mason called this a "generous curriculum" — an atmosphere, a discipline, and a life. The vast majority of homeschool families using her method mix and match these habits rather than adopting all of them at once.
Is Charlotte Mason a Christian Curriculum?
The method itself is deeply Christian. Mason was an Anglican who wrote often about children as image-bearers of God and about the Bible as the central "living book." Her original programs used daily scripture reading and Christian hymns as core content.
That said:
- Some modern CM curricula are explicitly Christian — Ambleside Online, Simply Charlotte Mason, Heart of Dakota, My Father's World, and A Gentle Feast all integrate scripture, hymns, and biblical worldview.
- Others are secular or "neutral" — Blossom & Root and Wildwood Curriculum use CM methods without Bible integration.
If you want a Christ-centered CM experience, stick with the first group.
Charlotte Mason vs Classical vs Traditional
| Charlotte Mason | Classical | Traditional | |
|---|---|---|---|

| Lesson length | 15-45 min | 45-90 min | 45-60 min |
| Pace | Gentle, wide | Rigorous, deep | Standard grade level |
| Best fit | Nature-loving, book-loving families | Debate-loving, tradition-loving | Structured, school-at-home |
| Christian curricula | Ambleside, Simply CM, MFW | Memoria Press, Veritas, Classical Conversations | Abeka, BJU Press |
Many families blend — a common combo is classical for the older years, Charlotte Mason for the elementary years.
Christian Charlotte Mason Curricula (2026)
Here's a working shortlist. All of these are used by Arizona homeschool families, and most have Arizona ESA reimbursement paths for their academic components (see below).
Ambleside Online — Free
The gold-standard Christian CM curriculum. A volunteer-run schedule using Charlotte Mason's original reading lists, updated with English-language substitutes. Cost: $0 (you buy or borrow the books it schedules). Best for families who want the most authentic Mason experience and don't mind assembling their own book stack. See our Ambleside Online overview.
Simply Charlotte Mason — $$
Family-style CM curriculum sold as complete guides. Their history rotation (Genesis-Deuteronomy through Modern Times) is taught to all your kids together. Cleaner "open-and-go" than Ambleside, with Spelling Wisdom, Visits To… geography series, and a full Bible plan. See our Simply Charlotte Mason overview.
My Father's World — $$
Blends Charlotte Mason, classical, and unit-study methods on a five-year history cycle. Bible-integrated across every subject. Great transition curriculum for families coming from traditional schooling who want something more literature-rich but still scripted. See our My Father's World overview.
Heart of Dakota — $$
Christian, CM-flavored curriculum with tight, scripted daily plans. Popular with families who love Mason's principles but want less DIY. See our Heart of Dakota overview.
A Gentle Feast — $$
Newer Christian CM curriculum with a rotating four-year history cycle. Beautifully designed, family-style, and heavily focused on habit training.
The Good and the Beautiful — $-$$
Not strictly Charlotte Mason, but CM-adjacent — literature-rich, art and nature-heavy, gentle. A common starting point for families curious about the CM style. See our Good and the Beautiful overview.
Living Books: The Heart of the Method
If you take only one thing from Charlotte Mason, take living books. A living book is written by one passionate author, in narrative form, with real ideas — not a committee-written textbook. Examples:
- History: Story of the World (Susan Wise Bauer), Trial and Triumph (Richard Hannula), A Child's History of the World (V.M. Hillyer)
- Science: The Burgess Bird Book, Handbook of Nature Study (Anna Comstock), the Apologia elementary Zoology series
- Character: Little Britches, Understood Betsy, The Boxcar Children
- Poetry: A poet a term (Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, Christina Rossetti)
- Bible: The Bible itself is a living book — read a chapter aloud each day, no curriculum required
Most Charlotte Mason curricula are essentially curated book lists with a schedule. That's why Ambleside Online can be free — the value is the curation, not the printed pages.
What a Typical CM Day Looks Like
For a 2nd grader:
- 8:30 - Bible reading (10 min) followed by a hymn and prayer
- 8:45 - Math (20 min) — RightStart Math, Math-U-See, or Saxon
- 9:10 - Copywork (10 min) — one sentence from a favorite living book
- 9:25 - Reading lesson (15 min) — All About Reading or Ambleside's reading list
- 9:45 - Break outside
- 10:00 - History (20 min) — read one chapter, then narrate
- 10:25 - Nature study or art (30 min, 2-3 times/week)
- 11:00 - Foreign language, poetry, or music (15 min)
- 11:15 - Free reading and free play
Total instruction time: under 2 hours. That's not a typo. Charlotte Mason schools produce strong readers, writers, and thinkers on far less seat time than a traditional school day — because attention is undivided and content is meaty.
Charlotte Mason and Arizona ESA
Arizona's Empowerment Scholarship Account covers most of what a Charlotte Mason homeschool needs:
- Living books. Reimbursed as curriculum when purchased from a real bookstore (with an itemized receipt).
- Nature study supplies. Nature journals, watercolor sets, field guides, and magnifying glasses are routinely reimbursed.
- Math and language arts curricula. Fully covered — see our ESA curriculum guide.
- Music and art appreciation. Composer studies, hymnals, and art print sets typically qualify.
- Field trips. Museum memberships and educational admissions are allowable.
- What's usually NOT covered: Bible curricula, devotional readers, and theology books — see our ESA-approved Bible curriculum guide.
Practical tip: Because Ambleside Online is free, most families' ESA spend goes to the books it schedules — many of which are inexpensive paperbacks and public-domain reprints. Budget-conscious CM families often finish the year with a large ESA balance still available for enrichment classes and co-op tuition.
Getting Started in Arizona
- Read one book about the method. Karen Andreola's A Charlotte Mason Companion or Sonya Shafer's Charlotte Mason's Living Ideas are gentle entry points. Susan Schaeffer Macaulay's For the Children's Sake is the classic.
- Pick a starting curriculum. Ambleside if you're a DIYer, Simply Charlotte Mason or Heart of Dakota if you want it scripted.
- Build the habit of narration first. Read one paragraph, ask your child to tell it back. That's the entire skill.
- Add nature study weekly. Even 20 minutes outside with a notebook works.
- Find community. Many Arizona Christian homeschool co-ops lean Charlotte Mason — ask before joining. Statewide, families gather at CM retreats (A Delectable Education, Common House Meetups) and online through the AmblesideOnline forums.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Charlotte Mason curriculum Christian?
Mason herself was a devout Anglican, and her original method is Christian at its core. Most modern curricula that follow her method — Ambleside Online, Simply Charlotte Mason, My Father's World, Heart of Dakota, A Gentle Feast — are explicitly Christ-centered. A few (Blossom & Root, Wildwood) are secular.
Is Charlotte Mason rigorous enough for high school?
Yes. Ambleside Online scheduled through Year 12 is more rigorous than most public high schools — students read hundreds of pages of classical literature, history, and philosophy annually. What it doesn't look like is standardized test prep, so families targeting elite universities usually supplement with SAT/ACT prep and dual-enrollment community college classes.
Can I do Charlotte Mason with multiple kids at different ages?
Absolutely — it's arguably the method's strongest feature. History, science, geography, art, music, and Bible are taught family-style, with each child narrating at their own level. Only math and language arts are truly individual.
Do I need to be artistic or outdoorsy to teach this method?
No. You need to be willing to do both alongside your children. Charlotte Mason is not for the parent who wants to hand over a workbook — but neither does she require a nature expert or a trained artist. You learn together.
Is Charlotte Mason a good fit for kids with dyslexia?
The narration-first, minimal-worksheet approach is often gentle on dyslexic learners. But reading itself still needs a systematic phonics program — pair CM with an Orton-Gillingham reading curriculum like All About Reading, and ideally an OG-trained tutor.
Can ESA pay for Ambleside Online?
Ambleside is free, so there's nothing to reimburse for the schedule itself. ESA typically covers the books Ambleside schedules (as curriculum) and any subscriptions or classes you add on top. See our ESA curriculum how-to.
What's the difference between Charlotte Mason and Classical?
Classical is heavier on formal logic, rhetoric, Latin, and structured debate. Charlotte Mason is gentler, more literature-and-nature focused, and treats habit and attention as the foundation. Many families blend — CM for the younger years, classical for high school.
