About

(A good way to describe our school is as a "Home Away from Home - School".) We are a small, private school for kids with Special Learning Needs, with a focus on Autism (Level 1 or 2). Class size will always be small. Our student:teacher ratio is 4:1. We cover Reading, Writing, Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies. In addition, there will be Social Skills, Social Emotional Learning, Life Skills and Physical Activity opportunities. We also include “specials”, such as: Yoga, Music, Animal Studies, Art, Ceramics, Gardening/Plants, Basic ASL, Team-Building and Critical Thinking Activities. Our curriculum includes: online learning – Time4Learning+ Read Naturally Mystery Science direct instruction hands on/ manipulatives We use a variety of methods while observing what works best for each student. “Childhood is not a race to see how quickly a child can read, write, and count. Childhood is a small window of time to learn and develop at the pace which is right for each individual child.” As a private school, we are empowered to personalize the curriculum for each student. We believe school should serve the student with kindness and grace. Many students (with and without Autism) deal with anxiety due to functioning outside the “norm”. We offer a safe space where they can manage those anxieties better and with our help and guidance. Smaller class sizes, personalized materials / curriculum and a family-feel allow for children to relax, learn and flourish. Some benefits of smaller class size: Increased Participation One on one attention/ support Improved Student Performance Better Teacher/Student Connection Increased Confidence Less Anxiety Faster Identification of Learning Struggles Flexibility in Curriculum and learning methods Less Behavior Management We’ve seen that many kids are often overlooked and feel left out. They feel unwanted when they’re at school and not missed when they aren’t at school. We want to provide a school experience where these children feel wanted, missed, and loved. We know that kids will learn when they feel that their teachers like them and care about them. Bad days are inevitable but tomorrow is always a new day – to try again. We recognize that every experience is an opportunity to learn and grow. In addition to traditional subjects, we foster an environment of character development. Every student will see the importance of traits such as honesty, humility, respect, kindness, responsibility, good work ethic, grace, mercy, courage, diligence, healthy self-esteem and integrity. Our primary student base will be those diagnosed as Level 1 (or 2) (ASD) Autism Spectrum Disorder/ High-Functioning. Many students struggle to learn in a traditional school setting and find that making friends is a challenge. We provide social skills opportunities where students will learn empathy, how to effectively communicate, how to navigate social situations and how to make and keep friends. All these (sometimes taken for granted) skills add to our overall quality of life and happiness. We want children to feel secure and capable, having the confidence and courage to be happy and to show kindness to others. These amazing kids have so much to offer. We also offer tutoring (in home and on site) - Apache Junction, Gold Canyon, Mesa and parts of QC & STV. Please contact us at divergentscholars@gmail.com
