Every class is designed to teach more than kicks and punches, incorporating lessons in respect, perseverance, self-control, goal setting, and confidence that students can apply in their everyday lives. The instructors are professionally certified, background-checked, and passionate about helping every student reach their full potential, regardless of age, experience, or fitness level. Unlike many martial arts schools that focus primarily on competition or physical techniques, Keene's ATA Martial Arts emphasizes creating confident leaders, stronger families, and healthier individuals. With structured age-specific programs, a welcoming community, a clean and modern training facility, and a curriculum backed by one of the world's largest martial arts organizations, students receive expert instruction in an environment where they are encouraged to grow beyond what they believe they are capable of doing. While the process may become uncomfortable the higher belt rank you become, students gain true confidence in their ability and the processes pushes them what they believe they are capable of achieving. After having taught Taekwondo for nearly 30 years it has become our legacy of "Training Students Through Taekwondo Today to Create Leaders for Tomorrow."

iTaekwondo, Arizona
Homeschool enrichment is where Arizona shines. Between universal ESA funding, a deep bench of instructional vendors, and year-round outdoor weather, an Arizona homeschooler has access to music, art, martial arts, aviation, STEM, dance, theater, and outdoor education that would cost double in most states — and most of it is paid for. This guide is the master index: what enrichment means, what qualifies, what ESA covers, which programs to look at by category and by city, and how to build a weekly rhythm that fits real family life.
What "homeschool enrichment" actually means
Enrichment is a classification by intent, not by keyword. A program is enrichment when its primary goal is to expand education beyond core academics — building a new skill, talent, interest, or experience. Music lessons, martial arts, robotics, dance, aviation, theater, cooking, sewing, chess, outdoor education, and studio art all qualify. Full-time schools, math tutors, reading tutors, speech therapy, and ABA therapy do not — those are academic or clinical services, not enrichment, even when a provider markets them under "enrichment."
Practical test: does the program complement the child's education, or does it replace part of core academics or clinical care? Complement = enrichment. Replace = something else.
Does Arizona ESA pay for enrichment?
Yes — and this is why Arizona has one of the strongest homeschool enrichment scenes in the country. The universal Empowerment Scholarship Account (roughly $7,000-$8,000 per K-12 student) covers structured instruction from a qualified provider on a curriculum. That includes almost every enrichment category below.
- Approved: music lessons, art classes, martial arts with belt progression, dance, gymnastics, cheer, robotics, coding, chess, theater, homeschool PE, aviation, sewing, cooking classes, speech and debate, small-group science labs.
- Denied: family gym memberships, open-play drop-ins, recreational league season fees (AYSO, Little League, club soccer), birthday-party activities, retail toys and craft supplies bought without a class attached, theme-park passes.
The line is instruction versus recreation. A weekly gymnastics class with a coach and a skill progression is instruction. A drop-in bounce-house session is recreation.
For the full ESA rulebook see the Arizona ESA enrichment hub, ESA and extracurriculars, and what Arizona ESA covers.
Enrichment by category
Music
The cleanest ESA-eligible category. Weekly one-on-one lessons and small-group classes in piano, guitar, violin, voice, drums, band, and orchestra all qualify when taught by a qualified instructor. Instrument rentals are broadly approved; purchases are case-by-case — document your ongoing lessons before submitting a receipt. See the ESA-approved music lessons guide and the ESA-approved music instructors directory.
Fine arts
Studio art with a teacher and a curriculum — ceramics, drawing, painting, mixed media — is a textbook ESA line item. Retail craft supplies purchased without an accompanying class are denied.
Martial arts and combatives
Structured martial arts with belt progression clears as instructional PE. Jiu-jitsu, karate, taekwondo, MMA, Krav Maga, and combatives all qualify. See can ESA pay for martial arts and the Arizona kids jiu-jitsu guide.
Dance, cheer, gymnastics
Class-based dance (ballet, jazz, contemporary), cheer, and gymnastics all clear as instructional PE. Skill-progression coaching makes the case obvious.
STEM, robotics, coding, chess
Class-based coding, robotics, chess clubs, and hands-on science labs qualify. LEGO Education kits tied to a robotics class are usually approved; standard retail LEGO sets are not.
Aviation and career-tech
Discovery flights and aviation classes from a certified provider clear as STEM or career-and-technical education — Mesa is Arizona's aviation anchor. Scuba certification, welding fundamentals, and other CTE-adjacent programs qualify when taught on a curriculum.
Theater, speech, and debate
Class-based theater programs, speech clinics, and debate clubs all qualify.
Homeschool PE, sports, outdoor education
Small-group PE, sports skills clinics, swim lessons at a recognized swim school, and instructional adventure programs (mountain biking with a guide, scuba certification, ropes courses with instruction) are approved. Recreational league season fees are not. See the Arizona ESA sports and athletics guide.
Cooking, sewing, life skills
Structured cooking and sewing classes with an instructor qualify. Retail groceries, fabric, and equipment bought without a class attached do not.
Enrichment by city
Every major Arizona metro has a working enrichment bench. These city guides list specific ESA-accepting vendors, sample budgets, and weekly rhythms:
- Chandler enrichment programs — Little Dragons MMA, Conquer Ninja, East Valley music
- Gilbert enrichment programs — Hammer & Strings, Desert Stars Cheer, deep East Valley bench
- Mesa enrichment programs — Kids in Aviation, A2Z Sports Training, EMK, Spartan Nation
- Scottsdale enrichment programs — Wonderfully Made Art Studio, Wright Gymnastics, boutique pods
- Coolest ESA enrichment programs in Arizona — the standout programs statewide

Three sample weekly enrichment rhythms
The arts-focused week (~$4,500/year)
| Day | Activity | Approx annual |
|---|---|---|
| Mon | Piano lesson (30 min) | $1,300 |
| Tue | Studio art class (90 min) | $1,000 |
| Thu | Choir or voice ensemble | $900 |
| Fri | Theater workshop | $1,300 |
The athletic-focused week (~$4,800/year)
| Day | Activity | Approx annual |
|---|---|---|
| Mon/Wed | Martial arts (2x/wk) | $1,600 |
| Tue | Homeschool PE class | $800 |
| Thu | Gymnastics or ninja | $1,400 |
| Sat | Swim lesson | $1,000 |
The STEM-focused week (~$4,200/year)
| Day | Activity | Approx annual |
|---|---|---|
| Mon | Robotics class | $1,200 |
| Wed | Coding class | $1,200 |
| Fri | Chess club + aviation ground school | $1,500 |
| Sat | Science center homeschool day | $300 |
Most families run a hybrid of the three. A common Arizona pattern is one strong music track + one strong athletic/martial arts track + one STEM class + a co-op day for community — landing around $4,000-$5,500 of the $7,500 ESA award on enrichment, with the balance on curriculum, testing, and tutoring.
Enrichment plus co-ops and pods
Many Arizona homeschool families layer enrichment onto a weekly co-op or pod day. Co-ops often bundle art, music, PE, and electives into a single Friday, giving families a strong social anchor plus multiple enrichment categories in one drive. See Arizona homeschool co-ops and city co-op guides (Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Scottsdale, Phoenix).
How to pay an enrichment vendor with ESA
- Confirm ClassWallet vendor status — ask the program directly. Registered vendors invoice ClassWallet on your student's account.
- Pay through ClassWallet when the program is a registered vendor — no receipts to chase.
- Reimbursement path — pay out of pocket and upload an itemized receipt inside ClassWallet.
- Pre-approval for anything unusual — aviation flight time, scuba, adventure programs — before you commit.

FAQ
What counts as homeschool enrichment in Arizona? Structured, instructor-led programs that build a skill, talent, or interest beyond core academics — music, art, martial arts, dance, gymnastics, robotics, coding, chess, theater, aviation, cooking, sewing, homeschool PE, and outdoor education. Core academic tutoring and clinical therapy are not enrichment.
Does Arizona ESA pay for homeschool enrichment classes? Yes. Arizona's universal Empowerment Scholarship Account covers structured instruction from a qualified provider across every enrichment category. Recreation, family memberships, and league season fees are excluded.
How much of my ESA award should I spend on enrichment? Most Arizona homeschool families spend $3,000-$5,500 of a $7,500 ESA award on enrichment. The balance goes to curriculum, testing, tutoring, and required subject-area purchases.
Can I use ESA for a gym membership so my child can play sports? No. Family gym memberships and open-play drop-ins are recreation, not instruction. A class-based sports skills clinic, martial arts program with belt progression, or coached swim lesson at a recognized swim school does qualify.
Does ESA pay for club sports or Little League? Recreational league season fees are generally denied. Skills clinics, private coaching, and instructional camps with a certified coach are typically approved.
Does ESA pay for music lessons? Yes — weekly one-on-one lessons and small-group music classes in piano, guitar, violin, voice, drums, band, and orchestra. See ESA-approved music lessons.
Can I buy an instrument with ESA funds? Rentals are broadly approved. Purchases are case-by-case — document your ongoing lessons and consider pre-approval before a large purchase.
Does ESA pay for art supplies? Only when tied to a specific class. A studio class fee that includes supplies is fine. A retail art-supply run without a class attached is denied.
Are homeschool co-op fees ESA-eligible? Yes when the co-op is a registered vendor or issues an itemized invoice tied to instruction. See how to use ESA funds for curriculum for the paperwork.
Can non-ESA homeschool families use these programs too? Absolutely. Every program in these directories accepts private-pay families. ESA just makes them more affordable.
How do I find enrichment programs near me? Start with the city guides above, then browse the Arizona city pages and category hubs. For a specific need, run a search on the find a program tool.
Do I still file a homeschool affidavit if we do lots of enrichment? It depends on funding. Private-pay families file an affidavit under ARS §15-802. ESA families sign the ESA contract instead — the contract replaces the affidavit. You cannot hold both simultaneously. See homeschool vs ESA in Arizona.
What if a vendor isn't on ClassWallet? You can still use them via the reimbursement path — pay out of pocket, upload the itemized receipt to ClassWallet. Ask the vendor about becoming a registered vendor if you plan to use them long-term.
Can I stack multiple enrichment categories in one week? Yes, and most families do. A typical rhythm is one music track + one athletic track + one STEM or arts elective + a co-op day. Budget $4,000-$5,500/year of ESA on enrichment and leave room for curriculum.
