Hello, my students call me Ms. Kelly. I help students become stronger, more confident writers without taking over their work. My goal is to help students understand how writing works, find their own voice, and develop a process they can use again and again. I want them to leave tutoring with more than a finished assignment. I want them to know how to begin when stuck, organize ideas, revise thoughtfully, and trust themselves as writers. A typical week is shaped around the student rather than a rigid curriculum. Parents stay in the driver's seat, choosing which courses fit their student and their family's values, while our team and university instructors handle the academic support and grading. The Maricopa County Community College District — ten colleges across the Phoenix metro — is the most common dual enrollment path for Arizona homeschoolers. Here's how the system works, what it costs, and how homeschooled students actually get in.
Dual enrollment vs. concurrent enrollment at Maricopa
Maricopa uses two terms, and the difference matters for homeschoolers:
- Dual enrollment — college courses taught in partnership with a high school, during the school day. Homeschoolers usually can't access this track directly because it runs through the high school.
- Concurrent enrollment / early college — your student enrolls directly at the college as an under-18 student, picking from the full course catalog, in person or online. This is the homeschool track. Mesa Community College works directly with homeschool families, pods, and co-ops, and the other nine colleges follow the same district admission rules.
Admission requirements for homeschooled students
Per the district's placement rules, students under 18 must demonstrate college readiness:
- Self-reported unweighted high school GPA of 2.0 or higher — a parent-issued homeschool transcript works, or
- Placement testing — the district's placement assessments in reading, writing, and math
Beyond admission, each course has its own prerequisites — College Algebra requires a math placement score or prior coursework, for example. Course placement is determined per course.
What it costs
Maricopa's in-state tuition is roughly $97 per credit hour (plus a $15 registration fee per semester and any course-specific fees). A typical 3-credit course lands around $300 all-in. Which Maricopa college should a homeschooler pick?
All ten colleges follow the same district admission rules, so choose by location and course catalog:
- Phoenix metro central: Phoenix College
- East Valley: Mesa, Chandler-Gilbert, Scottsdale, Rio Salado (online-heavy)
- West Valley: Glendale, Estrella Mountain, GateWay, Paradise Valley, South Mountain
Rio Salado in particular has a long history of online courses that fit a homeschool schedule. Homeschool pods sometimes coordinate so several students take the same course and section together.

- ENG101 First-Year Composition — the single most transferable college credit
- MAT151 College Algebra — validates high school math on an official transcript
- Lab sciences (BIO, CHM, PHY) — the hardest subjects to replicate at home

Transcript mechanics
Every passed course goes on an official Maricopa transcript — request it sent to universities at application time.
