Phoenix has the deepest Christian school bench in Arizona - a mix of century-old denominational academies, classical Christian preps, and newer non-denominational campuses. If you want a full five-day-a-week campus with paid faculty, biblical worldview across every subject, and a traditional K-12 experience, this is your guide.
We'll define what a private Christian school actually is, compare it to Phoenix's microschools and hybrid programs, walk through cost with and without Arizona's Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA), and end with the current directory of active Phoenix campuses.
What Is a Full-Time Private Christian School?
A private Christian school is a tuition-based, five-day-a-week institution that teaches every subject through a biblical worldview and operates under a formal statement of faith. Most are accredited, employ credentialed teachers, hand out standardized transcripts, and run athletics, arts, chapel, and clubs. It is the closest analog to a traditional public school - just faith-integrated from open to close.
Compared to the smaller models parents often consider alongside it:
| Model | Days/week | Paid faculty | Accredited transcript | Typical K-8 tuition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private Christian school | 5 | Yes | Usually | $7,000-$14,000 |
| Microschool | 4-5 | Yes | Sometimes | $6,000-$12,000 |
| Hybrid school | 2-3 | Yes | Sometimes | $4,000-$8,000 |
| Co-op | 1 | No (parents) | No | $100-$400 |

Why Phoenix Has So Many Options
Three forces made Phoenix one of the strongest Christian school markets in the country:
Universal ESA. Arizona's Empowerment Scholarship Account delivers roughly $7,000-$8,000 per K-12 student per year with no income cap. That number covers most or all of elementary tuition at nearly every Christian school in the Valley, and takes a meaningful bite out of high school tuition. Enrollment at Phoenix Christian schools has grown every year since ESA went universal in 2022.
A century of established institutions. Phoenix Christian Preparatory School, Arizona Lutheran Academy, and Paradise Valley Christian Preparatory have been operating for decades. That kind of tenure means real athletic programs, established college placement patterns, and alumni networks - things brand-new microschools cannot offer yet.
A wave of newer, mission-clear plants. North Valley Christian Academy, Catalyst Christian Academy, and 91st Psalm Christian School are examples of newer K-12 campuses that started with a defined statement of faith, competitive tuition, and ESA vendor status from day one.
Phoenix Metro by Area
Drive time matters when you're doing this five days a week. Here's how the Christian school scene breaks down.
North Phoenix, Desert Ridge, Paradise Valley. The densest cluster - Paradise Valley Christian Preparatory, North Valley Christian Academy, Scottsdale Christian Academy (technically Phoenix address, serving Scottsdale), and several classical academies. Families pull from Anthem, Cave Creek, and Scottsdale.
Central Phoenix, Arcadia, Biltmore. Smaller, denser campuses like Arcadia Christian Academy and Holy Family Academy anchor this corridor, often within walking distance of established neighborhoods.
West Phoenix, Maryvale, Glendale. Great Hearts Christos Maryvale and Arizona Lutheran Academy serve the West Valley. See also the Glendale Christian microschools guide for smaller options nearby.
East Valley (Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler, Tempe). Not covered here - see the state hub for full-time schools in Chandler, Gilbert, and Mesa.
Benefits of a Full-Time Christian School
Complete faith integration. Every subject, every day, taught from a biblical worldview. Chapel, Bible class, and prayer are built into the schedule, not add-ons.
Accredited transcripts. Most Phoenix Christian schools are accredited through ACSI, Cognia, or WASC. That matters for high school - college admissions, NCAA eligibility, and standardized transcript acceptance all lean on accreditation.
Real athletics, arts, and extracurriculars. A 300-student K-12 can field varsity teams, run a real theater program, offer band and choir, and staff clubs. Microschools cannot match this yet.
College placement patterns. Established Christian schools have decades of relationships with Christian colleges (Grand Canyon, Arizona Christian, Ouachita Baptist, Wheaton, Liberty) and with the University of Arizona / ASU. Ask each school for their most recent college placement list.
Community continuity. K-12 campuses let one family keep siblings on the same campus, at the same drop-off, with the same statement of faith, for 13 years.
ESA covers most of it. For elementary students, ESA typically covers 100% of tuition at Phoenix Christian schools. For high schoolers at premium campuses, families pay a supplement - but even $6,000 out of pocket for a $14,000 school is far below what a comparable private school costs in most states.
Potential Drawbacks
Tuition is real, especially in high school. Elementary tuition is often ESA-neutral. High school tuition at established academies can run $12,000-$16,000, leaving a supplement even after ESA.
Larger institutions move slowly. If you want a school that lets your kid skip a grade in math, or fast-tracks an accelerated reader, an established Christian school with 300 students and standardized curriculum may not flex the way a microschool would.
Statement of faith is a hard line. Most Phoenix Christian schools require families - not just students - to sign a statement of faith. Read it in full before applying. If your family cannot honestly affirm it, look for a school that fits or consider a microschool with softer requirements.
Waitlists at the top schools. Scottsdale Christian, Paradise Valley Christian, and North Valley Christian have real waitlists for popular grades. Apply early.
Uniforms, testing, and structure are non-negotiable at most. Traditional Christian schools operate like traditional schools. Uniforms, standardized testing, and a strict tardy policy are common. Families used to homeschool flexibility sometimes struggle with the shift.
Denominational Landscape
Phoenix Christian schools cover the full theological spectrum. It matters more than parents often realize - the same "Christian school" label can mean very different classrooms.
Non-denominational evangelical. The largest group. Broad statement of faith, contemporary worship in chapel, families from many church backgrounds. Examples in the directory: North Valley Christian Academy, Paradise Valley Christian Preparatory, 91st Psalm Christian School.
Classical Christian. Latin, logic, rhetoric, and a curriculum built on the classical Trivium. Often Reformed in theological orientation. Examples: Great Hearts Christos Maryvale (part of the Great Hearts network with a Christian mission at this campus).
Lutheran. Confessional Lutheran doctrine, formal liturgy, strong music tradition. Arizona Lutheran Academy is the flagship in the Valley.
Catholic. Sacramental life, mass, and Catholic doctrine woven through the day. Holy Family Academy is a classical Catholic option in Phoenix. See also the Diocese of Phoenix Catholic schools directory.
If you're unsure which tradition matches your family, start with the school's statement of faith and their weekly chapel format.
What They Typically Teach
Curriculum. Most use a hybrid of published Christian curriculum (Abeka, BJU Press, ACSI, Purposeful Design) and mainstream secular titles adapted for Christian instruction. Classical schools use Memoria Press, Veritas Press, or Classical Academic Press. See the ESA-approved Bible curriculum guide for what qualifies for reimbursement.
Bible and chapel. Daily Bible class from K through 12 at most schools, plus weekly chapel. Some schools require Bible credit for graduation.
Athletics. AIA-affiliated or CAA (Canyon Athletic Association) member schools field varsity teams. Smaller Christian schools compete in CAA where entry is easier.
Standardized testing. Most administer the Stanford 10 or Iowa Test annually. High schools give the PSAT, SAT, and ACT. ESA students at these schools are covered under the school's testing infrastructure.
Costs
Elementary (K-5). $7,000-$11,000 per year at most Phoenix Christian schools. ESA typically covers full tuition.
Middle school (6-8). $9,000-$13,000. ESA covers most; small supplement common.
High school (9-12). $11,000-$16,000, with the premium classical and college-prep academies at the top. ESA covers roughly half at the highest-tuition schools.
Fees. Application ($50-$300), enrollment ($300-$1,500), technology fee ($200-$500), and books ($200-$800). Many are ESA-billable but check first.
Uniforms. $200-$500 for the first year.
Athletics and activities. $150-$600 per sport per season, sometimes bundled into activity fees.
Financial aid. Nearly every Phoenix Christian school offers tuition assistance for families under ~$100K household income, funded by Arizona's School Tuition Organization (STO) tax credits. Ask each school's admissions office about their STO partner.
ESA Compatibility
Nearly every Phoenix Christian school we track is a registered ESA vendor and can be paid directly through ClassWallet. A few notes:
ESA replaces the homeschool affidavit. Enrolling in ESA means your student is legally an "ESA student," not a homeschooler. Read Homeschool vs. ESA in Arizona before signing.
ESA and STO tax credits can stack. Many Phoenix families combine ESA funding with an STO scholarship to close the gap on high school tuition. Ask the school's business office how they layer the two.
Confirm vendor status in writing. Before signing a tuition contract, ask the school for written confirmation that they are an active ClassWallet vendor and that tuition can be paid via ESA in your student's current quarter. See the Arizona Department of Education ESA page for current vendor lookup.

How to Choose the Right School
Tour, don't just brochure. Visit during a normal school day. Sit in on a class. Eat lunch on campus. Watch how teachers talk to students in the hall.
Ask the head of school:
- What is your statement of faith, and can I read it before applying?
- What accreditation do you hold, and how does it affect a future transfer or college application?
- What is the total cost - tuition, fees, uniforms, technology, books, activities?
- Are you an active ESA vendor, and how does your business office handle ClassWallet billing?
- What is your college placement pattern for the last three graduating classes?
- What is your teacher retention rate? How many teachers have been here more than five years?
Ask current families:
- Would you enroll your second child here?
- How has your child's faith been shaped by this school?
- What would you change about the school if you could?
- What surprised you about the community after joining?
Signs of a healthy school: clear pricing, stable leadership, teachers who stay, alumni who send their own kids back, and a statement of faith that matches how the school actually operates.
Red flags: vague answers about money, frequent leadership turnover, pressure to commit before touring, unclear discipline policy, or a mismatch between marketing materials and campus culture.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Phoenix Christian schools accredited?
Most are - through ACSI, Cognia, WASC, or a denominational body. Accreditation matters most at the high school level for college admissions and NCAA eligibility. Ask each school directly.
Can my kid switch mid-year?
Yes at most schools, space permitting. ESA can start any quarter, so financial timing is rarely the constraint.
What if my child has a learning difference?
Larger Christian schools often have resource programs for mild-to-moderate learning differences. Ask specifically about dyslexia support, ADHD accommodations, and IEP-equivalent services. Some families layer an Orton-Gillingham tutor alongside school for reading support.
Can I use ESA for a Christian school plus tutoring?
Yes, if total spending fits within your award. ESA can cover tuition, approved curriculum, and qualified tutors simultaneously. Save itemized receipts.
Do these schools require church membership?
Most do not. Nearly all require families to sign a statement of faith, but active membership at a specific church is uncommon as a requirement. Catholic schools sometimes give preference to parish families.
How do STO tax credits work with ESA?
You cannot receive an STO scholarship for the same tuition dollars ESA already covers. But at high schools where ESA does not cover full tuition, an STO scholarship can fund the remaining balance. Ask each school's business office how they coordinate the two.
Next Steps
- Read each school's statement of faith and academic profile.
- Apply for ESA if you haven't yet - see the Arizona ESA Homeschool Guide.
- Tour two or three campuses before deciding.
- Ask about STO scholarships if you'll be paying a tuition supplement.
- Confirm ESA vendor status in writing before signing a tuition contract.
Phoenix has more full-time Christian school options - and more diversity across those options - than any other Arizona city. Take the time to find the one that fits your family's theology, budget, and academic goals.
