Christian Preschools in Phoenix, Arizona (2026 Guide)

Christian preschools and Pre-K in Phoenix, AZ: church half-day programs, Catholic parish Pre-K, and full-day academy Pre-K. Costs, licensing checks, tour timing, and how ESA fits.

8 min read · Updated

Phoenix has the deepest bench of Christian preschools in the state — church-based half-day programs in Ahwatukee and North Phoenix, Catholic parish Pre-K, and full-day Pre-K wings attached to K–12 Christian academies. This guide explains the models, what they cost, how licensing works, and which Phoenix programs are listed in our directory.

The four models in Phoenix

  1. Church-based half-day preschool — 2, 3, or 5 mornings, usually 9:00 a.m.–noon. The largest seat pool in the city (Hope Church, Moon Valley Bible, God's Garden, Orange Tree, Living Streams).
  2. Full-day Christian childcare — 6 weeks through Pre-K, 6:30 a.m.–6:00 p.m., built for working parents (Elite Preschool, Phoenix Christian Preparatory).
  3. Catholic parish preschool — Pre-K attached to a parish elementary school, with a direct Kindergarten pathway (SS. Simon and Jude, St. Theresa, St. Thomas the Apostle).
  4. Pre-K wing of a Christian K–12 — one campus from age 4 through graduation (Phoenix Christian Preparatory, PV Christian Preparatory).

Arizona's ESA funds Kindergarten and up. A typical 3- or 4-year-old preschooler is not ESA-eligible. The exception: a child with a qualifying disability who is eligible for preschool special education services can access ESA earlier. See Arizona ESA and IEPs and the Arizona ESA guide.

Licensed vs. license-exempt — the safety question most parents miss

Arizona child care centers are licensed and inspected by the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS). Church-operated preschools may qualify for a religious exemption under A.R.S. § 36-884 and operate without a DHS license. Neither is automatically better — but you should know which you're touring.

Ask every program:

  • Are you DHS-licensed, or license-exempt as a church program?
  • Can I see your most recent inspection report? (Licensed centers: search the ADHS child care facility database.)
  • Do you participate in Quality First (Arizona's voluntary quality rating system)? A 3-, 4-, or 5-star rating is a meaningful signal.
  • Are you accredited by ACSI, NAEYC, or a diocesan office?
  • What are your ratios? Arizona allows up to 1:13 for 4-year-olds; strong programs run 1:8 to 1:10.
  • Are staff fingerprint-cleared, CPR/first-aid certified, and background-checked?

Neighborhood notes

  • Ahwatukee (85044/85048) — the densest cluster of church preschools in the city: Family of Christ, God's Garden at Horizon Church, and several smaller half-day programs. Waitlists start in January.
  • North Phoenix / Moon Valley (85023/85032) — Hope Church, Moon Valley Bible, Desert Springs, Scottsdale Bible's Cactus campus.
  • Central / Camelback corridor (85014–85018) — parish preschools (St. Theresa, St. Thomas the Apostle) and Episcopal day schools.
  • West Phoenix (85015/85017) — Phoenix Christian Preparatory and SS. Simon and Jude serve families who want a K–12 pathway.

Tour timeline for the 2026–27 school year

  • October–November — tour. Ask to observe during class time, not just an open house.
  • January — most Phoenix church preschools open registration; members and returning families get first pick.
  • February–March — 4-year-old Pre-K classes fill. Full-day slots go first.
  • Rolling — full-day childcare centers admit year-round as spots open.

Questions worth asking on the tour

  1. What is your statement of faith, and how is Bible taught day-to-day?
  2. What curriculum do you use for phonics and early math? (Common answers: Handwriting Without Tears, WEE Learn, Abeka K4, Frog Street.)
  3. What is teacher tenure? A program where lead teachers have been there 5+ years is a good sign.
  4. Is there an on-campus Kindergarten, and are preschool families given priority?
  5. What is the all-in cost — registration, supplies, field trips, holiday closures, and summer?
  6. Do you offer church-member or sibling discounts?
