Saxon Math and Math-U-See are the two most respected homeschool math programs among structured Christian families, and they embody the great math debate: spiral review versus mastery, textbook versus blocks.
Both work. The question is which one works for your child. For the full math field, see our Christian homeschool math curriculum guide.
The one-sentence difference
Saxon Math is an incremental textbook program where every lesson adds one small concept and every problem set reviews everything learned so far. Math-U-See is a mastery program where your child builds each topic with blocks and studies it until it is fully understood before moving on.
Head-to-head comparison
| Factor | Saxon Math | Math-U-See |
|---|---|---|
| Method | Spiral, incremental | Mastery, sequential |
| Daily work | Warm-up, lesson, mixed practice set | Video, build with blocks, focused practice |
| Review | Built into every problem set | Systematic review pages per lesson |
| Manipulatives | Early grades only | Integer blocks through the whole program |
| Parent workload | High, unless paired with DIVE videos | Low to moderate |
| Grade range | K through Calculus | Primer through Calculus |
| Rigor reputation | Very strong | Strong, more conceptual |
| Best fit | Routine-driven, college-prep families | Concept-first, hands-on learners |
Spiral vs mastery, in practice
In Saxon, no single day feels hard because each lesson adds only a small step. The difficulty is cumulative: problem sets draw on everything taught since September, so students are constantly retrieving old skills. Students who stick with Saxon rarely forget math.
In Math-U-See, each unit goes deep on one topic. Your child spends weeks on multiplication until it is automatic, then moves on. Kids who get lost when topics rotate daily often relax and thrive with this focus. The risk is the opposite: a child who masters a topic and never sees it again for months can get rusty, so the built-in review pages matter.
The daily workload
Saxon days are longer and parent-heavy in the elementary and middle years unless you add DIVE video instruction. Expect 45 to 90 minutes of math in upper grades.
Math-U-See days are shorter and more predictable: a short video, block-building, and practice pages. Many upper-level students run it largely independently.
Who thrives in each
Saxon suits kids with good stamina and a tolerance for repetition, and families aiming at STEM-heavy high school work. It is the math used by many rigorous Christian schools in Arizona, including programs in our directory.
Math-U-See suits kids who think in pictures and physical objects, kids with math anxiety who need to fully understand before moving on, and parents who want a calmer daily routine.
Cost
Saxon textbooks are a larger upfront purchase but non-consumable with a deep used market. Math-U-See blocks and instructor materials are reused across children; you rebuy student workbooks.
Arizona ESA notes
Both are commonly reimbursed as math curriculum through Arizona ESA. Confirm the specific items in ClassWallet. See our Arizona ESA guide.
