What makes a preschool "Christian"?
A Christian preschool weaves faith into the daily rhythm — Bible stories, prayer, worship songs, and biblical character formation are not add-ons but part of circle time, snack, art, and outdoor play. Teachers are typically believers who see their work as ministry, and most schools operate under a formal statement of faith. The academic scaffolding — letters, numbers, phonemic awareness, fine-motor readiness — looks like any strong preschool. The worldview is what distinguishes it.
Formats you'll see in Arizona
- Full-day, 5-day Pre-K — closest to traditional school; often at a K–12 Christian academy.
- Half-day, 3–5 day preschool — the most common church-based format for 3s and 4s.
- Mother's Day Out (MDO) — 1–2 mornings per week; social + faith exposure without a full commitment.
- Christian microschool Pre-K — 5–15 kids, mixed-age, Christ-centered, often ESA-friendly at K.
- Homeschool co-op preschool class — 1 morning/week Pre-K within a broader Christian homeschool community.

Prefer to keep preschool at home?
Many Christian families in Arizona homeschool the preschool years and add a weekly Christian co-op class for community, chapel, and structured social time. It's the lowest-cost, highest-flexibility path for the 3s and 4s. Once your child enters Kindergarten, the Arizona ESA opens up funding options that don't apply to traditional preschool.
How to evaluate a Christian preschool
Statement of faith & daily faith practice
Ask to see it — and ask what faith formation actually looks like in a Tuesday morning circle time. Does the class pray, sing worship, hear a Bible story every day, or once a week?
Teacher-to-child ratio
For 2s aim for 1:6 or better; for 3s and 4s 1:8–1:10 is common. Ask about lead teacher credentials and background-check policies.
Licensing status
Full-day programs should hold an Arizona Department of Health Services license. Part-time (<4 hrs/day) programs may operate as exempt religious programs — legal but with fewer state safeguards.
Discipline philosophy
Redirect vs. time-out vs. natural consequences vs. biblical shepherding — ask how staff handle a typical 3-year-old meltdown. You want an answer, not a stammer.
Curriculum framework
Play-based, ABeka, Handwriting Without Tears, Zoo-Phonics, The Good and the Beautiful Pre-K, or church-produced Bible curricula. Match to your child's temperament.
Path into Kindergarten
Does the preschool extend to K? If not, where do most graduates enroll? A preschool with strong K feeder relationships makes the transition much easier.
A quick word on ESA & preschool
Arizona's Empowerment Scholarship Account funds Kindergarten through 12th grade. Standard preschool tuition is not ESA-eligible unless your child has a qualifying disability and an IEP or evaluation showing preschool need. That's a real path — but it applies to a minority of families. For most, plan to pay preschool out of pocket, then apply for ESA the spring before Kindergarten. Read the full Arizona ESA guide and eligibility rules.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a Christian preschool?
- A Christian preschool is a faith-integrated program for children roughly ages 2 through 5 (or entering Kindergarten) that teaches early literacy, numeracy, and social skills alongside a biblical worldview — Bible stories, prayer, worship, and character formation woven into daily rhythm. Programs range from part-time church-based Mother's Day Out to full-day, 5-day Pre-K.
- Does Arizona ESA pay for Christian preschool?
- The Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) covers Kindergarten and up. Traditional preschool (ages 2–4) is generally NOT ESA-eligible unless the child has a qualifying disability and an IEP, in which case ESA can cover early-childhood therapies and preschool tuition at a registered vendor. Once your child enters a Kindergarten program at a Christian school, ESA typically applies — including at K-programs run by preschools that extend upward.
- What's the difference between preschool, Pre-K, and Kindergarten?
- Preschool is broadly ages 2–4 with heavy play, social, and pre-academic focus. Pre-K is the year before Kindergarten (age 4–5) and emphasizes letter/number readiness. Kindergarten is age 5–6, the first formal school year, and is ESA-eligible in Arizona.
- How much does a Christian preschool cost in Arizona?
- Part-time programs (2–3 mornings/week) typically run $2,500–$5,500 per year. Full-time 5-day programs run $6,000–$12,000 per year. Church-member and sibling discounts are common but often unadvertised — always ask.
- Are Christian preschools licensed?
- Arizona licenses child care through the Department of Health Services. Many church-based preschools operate as an exempt religious program, especially those meeting fewer than 4 hours/day. Full-day programs typically hold a DHS license. Ask each school about licensing, staff ratios, and background-check policies.
- When should I enroll?
- Popular Christian preschools in Phoenix, Scottsdale, Chandler, Gilbert, and Tucson open enrollment in January–February for the following August, and fill quickly at the 3s and 4s levels. Tour in the fall of the prior year for the best selection.
- Do Christian preschools require families to attend the sponsoring church?
- Church-based preschools often prioritize member families and offer discounted tuition, but most are open to the community. A few require agreement with a statement of faith; most only require agreement with the school's code of conduct.
- What curricula do Christian preschools use?
- Common frameworks include ABeka, The Good and the Beautiful (Pre-K), Sonlight P4/5, Handwriting Without Tears, Zoo-Phonics, and church-produced Bible curricula. Classical Christian preschools may use Memoria Press or classical readiness programs. Play-based schools often blend Reggio or Montessori influences with biblical formation.
- Are Christian homeschool preschool co-ops a good alternative?
- Yes — especially for families who want to keep their 3s and 4s home but add weekly community. Christian homeschool co-ops in the Phoenix and Tucson metros run Pre-K classes (often 1 morning/week) alongside older grades, giving your child chapel, story time, art, and peers while you continue to lead learning at home.

Know the difference
Homeschooling and ESA-funded education are not the same thing
Under Arizona law these are two distinct pathways with different rules. We label every listing with the pathway it primarily serves so you know what you're signing up for.
Homeschooling (ARS §15-802)
Parent files an Affidavit of Intent. No public funds. Parent picks any curriculum and keeps full control. Co-ops, tutors, and enrichment are paid out of pocket.
ESA-funded education
Family signs the ESA contract and the affidavit is withdrawn. Quarterly funds flow through ClassWallet, expenses must fit ADE's allowable list, and receipts are required. Legally not homeschooling.
