What a school day looks like

With Sonlight, the heart of the day is the couch. You read history, Bible, and literature aloud, discuss what you read, and your children learn through story. Instructor's guides schedule everything. Math, phonics, spelling, and science are added on.

With Abeka, the heart of the day is the desk. Each subject has a textbook or workbook, lessons are planned and scripted, and children work through phonics, arithmetic, language, science, history, and Bible as distinct subjects.

Neither is wrong. They simply build different kinds of days and different kinds of memories.

Academics

Abeka's phonics and arithmetic are famously strong, and children in the program typically read and compute early. Its scope-and-sequence is traditional and thorough.

Sonlight's strength is vocabulary, comprehension, historical thinking, and a love of reading. Sonlight kids are typically exposed to far more books and big ideas. The tradeoff is that skill subjects depend on whatever math and phonics programs you bolt on, so outcomes in those areas reflect those choices.

Cost and logistics

Sonlight is one of the more expensive options because you are buying dozens of real books per level, typically $700 to $1,300 per year. The upside: the books are non-consumable and build a home library that younger siblings reuse.

Abeka full-grade kits cost less up front but include consumable workbooks you rebuy per child.

Arizona ESA notes

Both are commonly used with ESA funds. Sonlight academic cores are generally reimbursable while its Bible packages are often excluded or paid privately.
