Tempe's Christian elementary options are compact but real: an established Lutheran K-8 campus with a full arts and athletics program, two smaller Christian academies, and a microschool for families who want something even smaller. And because Tempe sits in the middle of the Valley, Mesa, Chandler, and Ahwatukee campuses are all a short drive away.

Below: the Tempe landscape school by school, real costs with and without Arizona's Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA), and how to choose.

The Tempe Landscape

Emmanuel Lutheran School is Tempe's established Christian elementary campus, serving kindergarten through grade 8. Students begin each day with instruction in God's Word - devotions, Bible history, hymn study, and Scripture memorization - alongside language arts, math, science, social studies, music, PE, art, and technology. The extras are unusually rich for a school its size: piano, guitar, ukulele, and instrumental lessons; band, choir, and tone chimes in the upper grades; drama clubs that stage fall and spring musicals; athletic teams in flag football, volleyball, soccer, basketball, cross country, and track and field; plus chess club and an afterschool STEM lab. Before- and after-care are available, and its Sonshine Preschool (ages 3-4) feeds directly into kindergarten. Emmanuel is a registered ESA vendor.

Gethsemane Christian Academy is a smaller Tempe Christian academy and a registered ESA vendor - worth a tour for families who want an intimate campus where every teacher knows every student.

Grace Christian Academy is another established Tempe Christian school and ESA vendor, with a separate preschool arm for younger siblings.

Grace Place Learning Lab is the microschool option - a small, ESA-approved learning environment for families who want paid teachers and a biblical worldview at an even smaller scale than a traditional campus.

Tempe families also routinely tour elementary campuses in Chandler, Mesa, and Gilbert - all 15-25 minutes away.

Benefits

ESA covers full elementary tuition in most cases. Arizona's universal ESA runs roughly $7,000-$8,000 per student per year with no income cap - that is full K-5 tuition at most Tempe campuses.

A real K-8 with real extras. Emmanuel Lutheran's music, drama, athletics, and STEM offerings rival schools several times its size.

Central location. Tempe is the geographic middle of the Valley - if no in-town campus fits, half a dozen strong options in Mesa, Chandler, and Ahwatukee are within a short drive.

Small enough to be known. Tempe's Christian schools run small classes where teachers know every family.

Potential Drawbacks

No Christian high school in town. Tempe's Christian schools top out at grade 8 - plan on a Mesa, Chandler, or Phoenix campus for high school. See Private Christian Schools in Tempe for the full picture.

Short list. Two academies and one Lutheran K-8 is the whole in-town roster. Popular grades can fill by late winter.

Statement of faith is binding on families, not just students. Read it before touring.

What They Typically Teach

Curriculum. Structured, traditional academics - phonics-based reading, grammar, arithmetic - taught from a biblical worldview, with daily Bible instruction. See ESA-approved Bible curriculum.

Bible and chapel. Daily Bible class is standard; Emmanuel begins every day with devotions, Bible history, hymn study, and Scripture memorization.

Testing. Standardized testing (Stanford 10, Iowa, or MAP) annually - ESA students are covered by the school's testing.

Costs in Tempe

  • Elementary (K-5): $6,500-$9,500/year. ESA usually covers full tuition.
  • Middle school (6-8): $8,000-$11,500. ESA covers most.
  • Fees: application $50-$250, enrollment $300-$1,200, books $150-$600.
  • Before/after care: available at Emmanuel; ask each school for rates.

Ask each admissions office about their School Tuition Organization partner - STO scholarships stack with ESA across different tuition dollars.

ESA Compatibility

Emmanuel Lutheran School, Gethsemane Christian Academy, Grace Christian Academy, and Grace Place Learning Lab are registered ESA vendors payable through ClassWallet.

How to Choose

  1. Tour Emmanuel Lutheran first if you want the fullest K-8 program in town - then compare the smaller academies on feel and fit.
  2. Check the actual morning commute, not the midday one.
  3. Read the statement of faith in full.
  4. Ask for the all-in annual number.
  5. Confirm ESA vendor status in writing.
  6. Ask where graduates go for high school - the answer tells you a lot about preparation.
