Get Your Struggle Reader Back on Track! I'm a reading and spelling interventionist for ages K-12 struggling with dyslexia and other reading challenges. Sessions are one-hour, twice a week. Most parents search for "reading tutor" when they need one specific thing. The categories:

The most expensive mistake is hiring a general tutor for a dyslexic reader. General tutoring re-teaches the same lesson more slowly; structured literacy rewires how the child maps sound to symbol. They are different jobs.
Structured Literacy and Orton-Gillingham
Orton-Gillingham (OG) is the parent methodology; Barton, Wilson, and Logic of English are programs built on it. All of them are:
- Explicit — every sound-spelling rule is taught directly, never inferred.
- Systematic and cumulative — skills build in a fixed order.
- Multisensory — the child hears, says, sees, and writes each pattern.
- Diagnostic — the tutor adjusts session by session based on error patterns.
Expect 2 sessions a week for 8–12 months for a genuinely dyslexic reader. Expect measurable decoding gains in 8–12 weeks. Any tutor promising two grade levels in a summer is overselling.

Phonics for Early Readers (Pre-K through 2nd Grade)
For a 4- to 7-year-old, you usually don't need a specialist — you need a systematic program taught consistently. Many Arizona families run The Good and the Beautiful, All About Reading, or Logic of English at home and hire a tutor once a week to keep the pace honest and catch errors early.
That once-a-week model is cheap insurance. It's far less expensive than remediating in 4th grade.

Does Arizona ESA Pay for Reading Tutoring?
Yes. Tutoring is an approved ESA expense.
- Individual tutors need at least a high school diploma. OG or Barton certification is not required by the state, but it is what you should be screening for.
- Tutoring businesses need accreditation or a signed attestation.

In-Person vs. Online for Reading
In-person wins for reading more than any other subject. Early readers need an adult watching their mouth, their eyes, and their letter tiles. Attention wanders on a screen at exactly the age when attention matters most.
Exceptions: some Barton and OG practitioners run excellent online sessions with digital tile boards, and for families in Yuma, Payson, Show Low, or the White Mountains, a good online OG tutor beats no tutor at all. Prioritize certification over proximity if it comes down to it.
How to Vet a Reading Tutor
- Ask which program they're trained in — "Orton-Gillingham," "Barton Level 4," "Wilson." A vague "I use phonics" is a red flag for a struggling reader.
- Ask for their certification level and training hours. OG training ranges from a weekend to a two-year fellowship.
- Ask how they screen before starting. A good tutor tests decoding, phonemic awareness, and fluency before session one.
- Ask how progress is measured — words-per-minute, nonsense-word decoding, spelling inventories. Not "she seems more confident."
- Ask for homeschool-family references specifically.
- Confirm ESA vendor status before the first invoice.
