What ESA actually covers
Arizona's Empowerment Scholarship Account pays roughly $7,000–$8,000 per K-12 student with no income cap, paid to registered vendors through ClassWallet. At most Arizona Christian elementary schools that covers tuition in full. Signing an ESA contract replaces the homeschool affidavit — see homeschool vs. ESA.
Before you sign
- Ask for the all-in annual number, not just tuition.
- Get ESA vendor status confirmed in writing.
- Read the statement of faith in full — families sign it too.
- Tour on a normal school day, not at an open house.
- At a K-8 school, ask where last year's 8th graders enrolled.

Frequently asked questions
How many Christian elementary schools are in Arizona?
Arizona has more than 60 full-time Christian schools serving elementary and middle grades — traditional K-8 campuses, K-12 academies, hybrid programs, and a fast-growing set of Christian microschools. This directory lists every active program we track, by city.
How much does a Christian elementary school cost in Arizona?
Elementary (K-5) tuition typically runs $6,000 to $12,000 per year and middle school (6-8) $7,500 to $14,000. Christian microschools generally run $4,600 to $9,000, and two- or three-day hybrid programs $4,000 to $7,500. Scottsdale and North Phoenix sit at the top of each range; the West Valley, Tucson, and rural markets sit at the bottom.
Does Arizona ESA pay for Christian elementary school tuition?
In most Arizona markets, yes. The ESA award of roughly $7,000 to $8,000 per K-12 student per year covers a typical Christian elementary tuition bill in full. A gap usually appears in middle school in higher-priced markets and becomes significant in high school. Confirm the school is an active ClassWallet vendor in writing before signing a tuition contract.
Is K-8 or K-12 better?
K-8 is the most common model in Arizona and keeps middle schoolers as the oldest students on campus rather than the youngest in a 6-8 building. The trade-off is a high school search in 8th grade, and Christian high school seats are scarcer than elementary seats. A K-12 campus removes both transitions.
What is the difference between a Christian elementary school and a Christian microschool?
A traditional Christian elementary school runs five full days with graded classrooms, credentialed teachers, and usually accreditation. A microschool serves 5 to 20 students in a mixed-age setting, often four or five days, with a lower price point and more flexibility but less frequent accreditation. Both are commonly ESA-billable.
When should I apply for kindergarten?
Apply in January or February for an August start. Kindergarten is the first ESA-funded year and the most common entry point, so it is the grade that fills first — at small campuses one classroom is the entire grade.
What should I ask on an elementary school tour?
Ask how the school teaches reading and which method it uses, what happens when a child is ahead or behind, how many elementary teachers were on staff three years ago, how faith is integrated in subjects other than Bible, and — at a K-8 school — where last year's 8th graders enrolled for high school.
