Having earned degrees in both music and humanities, she has taught hundreds of aspiring musicians from ages 5 to senior citizen. She specializes in beginning to intermediate instruction for Piano, Guitar, Voice, Bass, Ukulele, and Drums. Sandy’s teaching philosophy is deeply rooted in empathy. Remembering her own nerves as a young music student, she intentionally creates a supportive, zero-anxiety environment. Also, yes prayer for students and families is another unseen benefit with Sandy. Whether your goal is to master classical masterpieces, play pop hits, learn movie themes, or prepare for formal recitals and exams, Sandy is here to help you achieve it. As a mother who raised five children, she is uniquely equipped and comfortable working with various ages, learning styles, and special needs. My vision was to provide a safe haven for children and adults to be seen and heard for the passion within them, and teach them to use the inspiration within to change this world for the better. Desert Music Studio
Desert Music Studio is a private music school in East Mesa, Arizona, providing one-on-one music lessons for homeschool students and families of all ages and experience levels. Our mission is to help students develop a lifelong love of music while building confidence, discipline, creativity, and practical musical skills in a supportive, professional environment. We believe music education should give students an opportunity to express themselves, work toward meaningful goals, and experience the satisfaction of making real progress. Our program offers private lessons in piano, voice, guitar, violin, viola, and cello, with additional instruction available in ukulele and bass guitar. Because lessons are one-on-one, instruction can be tailored to each student's age, interests, learning style, and current ability. For homeschool families, private music lessons can be a flexible and rewarding part of the weekly school schedule. What makes Desert Music Studio different is the combination of individualized instruction, professional teachers, and a family-friendly atmosphere. We welcome students who are completely new to music as well as students who already have years of experience. Our goal isn't to force every student into the same curriculum or pace. Instead, we meet students where they are and help them build skills and confidence step by step. We also value the role parents play in a student's musical education and strive to make communication and expectations clear throughout the learning process. We proudly serve homeschool families throughout Mesa, East Mesa, Gilbert, and surrounding communities. ESA funds are accepted through ClassWallet, making private music education an option for eligible families using Arizona's Empowerment Scholarship Account funds. Flute Lessons with Dr. Stone
My journey began when I was a 12-year old homeschooled girl, shy and stepping far out of my comfort zone to join a small church orchestra for a couple of rehearsals and a concert. I brought my recorder (spottily learned from a Teach Yourself Recorder book) and discovered that I knew far less than I had thought. A kind, skilled flutist sitting beside me took me under her wing and mentored me through the whole experience. I loved every bit of it! The orchestra swelled all around me like a stereo, and though I didn't have the confidence to play more than a few notes in one piece on the whole program, I knew that I wanted to learn to play the flute like the wonderful flutist who had guided me during that incredible weekend. I began taking lessons and becoming increasingly attached to the instrument, and before I knew it, I was auditioning for the music program at a prestigious university. I went all the way through college, receiving my Bachelor's, Master's, and finally Doctorate degrees, all in flute performance! My homeschool education prepared me in the very best way for my college studies and provided me with a strong work ethic, determination, and creativity. Now, my mission is to share the musical knowledge I've accumulated over the past 15+ years with as many homeschooled students as possible! I offer dedicated weekly online lessons to students from age 6 and upward, personalized to the individual student's needs and goals. Total beginners all the way through advanced musicians are welcome in my studio! Lessons are held via Zoom (using the Original Sound for Musicians feature).

Miss Bethany’s Violin and Viola Studio
I feel that God has put it in my heart that my life’s mission is to teach kids music and to also glorify his name through music. In the Silly String studio, I use a Suzuki based learning method—which includes privates 1:1 and small group learning each week (K-8). I teach both violin and viola students. We have atleast two official recitals a year, and summers are optional (many teachers charge over summer, but I don’t). I allow for make ups and do not charge over holidays/school breaks. A little bit about me: I love kids, teaching, music and God! I have taught privately for 6 years. I have my masters degree in music education, with an emphasis in early string pedagogy—and I am Wee Violin certified as well as in the process of becoming officially Suzuki Certified.

Music with Miss Macy
Voice studio offering private vocal lessons (in-studio and in-home options available) as well as general music classes. About the Instructor: Miss Macy has been studying classical voice for over a decade. She recently completed her Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance at the University of Arizona. During her coursework at the University, Miss Macy studied vocal pedagogy (the art of teaching singers). She has been training singers in her private studio for over two years. Teaching Philosophy: I believe that each voice is important and deserves to be heard. Every person deserves to feel confident when sharing their voice either by themselves, or by joining with others to make music. Proper instruction under the guidance of a caring teacher can help foster confidence and a love for music that will last a lifetime. What do lessons include? We will start each lesson with a brief physical warm-up, followed by a vocal warm-up and technique exercises. Then, we will move on to the repertoire portion of the lesson. Occasionally, we may have a non-traditional lesson, during which we will focus on music theory, music history, or other important musical or vocal concepts. Private voice lessons are classical music-focused, but may include instruction in musical theatre, jazz, and sacred music as well.

Through exceptional choral training in a welcoming and encouraging environment, singers develop healthy vocal technique, musicianship, leadership, and lifelong friendships. Whether a singer is brand new to choir or has years of experience, she will be challenged, supported, and celebrated every step of the way. Our program serves girls in 2nd–12th grade with age-appropriate ensembles that focus on both musical excellence and personal growth. Weekly rehearsals combine vocal instruction, music literacy, ensemble skills, movement, and performance preparation in an engaging, positive atmosphere. Throughout the year, singers perform in community concerts, collaborative performances, holiday events, and special outreach opportunities, building confidence both on and off the stage. Phoenix Girls Chorus is more than a music program—it's a community built on kindness, encouragement, and belonging. We emphasize teamwork over competition, creating a space where girls learn to support one another while discovering the power of their own unique voices. Our singers develop discipline, resilience, creativity, and leadership skills that extend far beyond the rehearsal room. Families appreciate our welcoming culture, clear communication, and commitment to making high-quality music education accessible. We encourage girls to visit a rehearsal, meet our singers, and experience firsthand the supportive environment that has inspired young musicians in the Valley for generations. No prior choir experience is required for younger singers, and every new member is welcomed with care. If your daughter loves to sing—or is simply ready to discover that she does—we would love to welcome her to the Phoenix Girls Chorus family.
Piano By Andrew
My name is Andrew and I run a private piano studio in South Peoria, AZ for enthusiastic and curious students interested in learning to play the piano. Helping my students make music with purpose is my life's work (not just a 'hobby'). In addition to private lessons, I teach Preschool Piano to students ages 4-6. We focus on making music from Day 1 by teaching music that students love to play! Gone are the days of students sitting with a method book reading 'one-note-at-a-time' (yawn). After all, shouldn't piano lessons be about making music? Our quarterly group lessons, summer camps and studio events help students form lasting friendships that make piano lessons more meaningful. Piano is often a solitary pursuit. No wonder students want to quit! Here, students are part of a supportive community. Once they become friends, they're eager to play for each other! To learn more about my studio, visit my website. Feel free to message me if you'd like to learn more! I would love to hear from you.

Private Vocal Lessons - Voice lessons with Nicole at Performers Playhouse
I teach weekly private voice lessons grounded in vocal pedagogy. My approach is simple: everything it takes to sing is a muscle. So we train those muscles the way an athlete trains, building toward the strongest, most controlled, and best sound your voice can make. Learning doesn't stop when the lesson ends. Every student gets a private online portal where I upload their weekly exercises, vocal performance tracks, and audition repertoire. Students are expected to practice there four times a week between lessons, so real progress happens week over week. My training is rigorous, and it's also genuinely fun. When you combine joy with hard work, there's nothing you can't do, and that combination has carried past students to Broadway, Disney, and American Idol. Strong vocal technique pays off far beyond singing. The same skills that power a great performance help you present to executives in a conference room, preach from the pulpit, and carry confidence into everyday conversation.

Vibrant Violin Music Lessons
Learn fiddle, violin, or cello through private lessons or group classes. I've been running my private teaching studio for over 20 years, building it up from scratch in 4 different locations during that time. My students have gone on to win awards, competitions, and pursue music as a lifelong passion and career. I am classically trained, but I love to explore other styles with my students and on my own. I use a combination of teaching methods to provide my students with a well rounded musical experience. I believe it is equally important to be able to read music, as well as play by ear.

West Valley Music Lessons
Tania Newberry – Music Biography Tania Newberry is a Music Director, Performance Coach, Vocal Instructor, Pianist, and Performing Arts Educator with more than 30 years of experience teaching, directing, and inspiring performers of all ages. Her career combines expertise in music education, vocal performance, piano instruction, musical theatre, choreography, and community arts programming. Raised in a family of musicians and performers, Tania began performing alongside her mother at the age of three and started formal piano studies at age four. Throughout her childhood she participated in pageants, talent competitions, dance productions, and theatrical performances, developing a lifelong passion for music and the performing arts. During her years in high school, Tania discovered her love for musical theatre and pursued advanced studies in voice and piano under respected instructors and mentors. By the age of seventeen, she had already begun teaching young musicians and discovered a natural gift for music education that would shape her professional career. Tania continued her artistic training in multiple dance disciplines including ballet, jazz, tap, ballroom, clogging, line dancing, and musical theatre choreography. As a vocalist, she developed specialties in jazz, classical, and Broadway repertoire. She also served as a piano accompanist for collegiate choirs and ensembles while completing her Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education with a Minor in Music. Throughout her career, Tania has taught private piano and voice students ranging in age from three to ninety-two years old. She founded and operated her own private studio, Winning Music, where she provided instruction in piano, voice, performance coaching, and audition preparation for aspiring performers and musicians. While living in Alabama, Tania served as Lead Music Instructor and Summer Camp Director for a major music academy, where she directed camps, instructed private students, and judged statewide theatre competitions. She also worked as a vocal and choreography coach for local schools and theatre programs, helping students prepare for show choir competitions, musical productions, and state adjudications. Under her instruction, students consistently earned superior ratings at state competitions, and ensembles she coached earned multiple national championships. Most recently, Tania served as Choir Director for middle school students, directing choirs, developing curriculum, and producing performances and concerts for grades five through eight. She has also worked extensively in senior communities as an Activity Director and music program leader, creating educational programming while directing community choirs, ukulele ensembles, and music appreciation classes. In addition to her professional work, Tania has dedicated many years of volunteer service as a church Music Minister, leading choirs, producing musical presentations, and creating worship experiences through music. Today, Tania continues to share her passion for music education, performance, and mentorship throughout Arizona. Whether working with beginning students, competitive performers, community ensembles, or lifelong learners, her mission remains the same: to help others discover confidence, creativity, and joy through music and performance.

How Arizona ESA pays for music lessons
Private music lessons are one of the most commonly reimbursed enrichment expenses on the Arizona ESA. Teachers who are ClassWallet vendors invoice ClassWallet directly, ADE approves the expense, and funds transfer to the teacher. If a teacher isn't yet a ClassWallet vendor, families can often pay out of pocket and submit for reimbursement — but confirm before you commit. See the ESA guide and ClassWallet guide for step-by-step mechanics, and the ESA music lessons article for what typically qualifies.
Choosing the right instrument to start with
Piano is the most common starting instrument because it teaches theory, rhythm, and reading simultaneously — many teachers recommend at least a year of piano before switching. Guitar and ukulele are approachable for kids who want to play songs quickly. Voice lessons typically start around age 8–10 once the voice is more stable. Strings (violin, viola, cello) work well for young beginners with a patient teacher. Drums, band instruments, and worship-focused instruments are usually best after a child has some rhythm or theory background.
Private lessons vs. group classes
Private lessons (30–60 minutes, one-on-one, weekly) are the standard for real progress. Expect $30–$80 per lesson in Arizona depending on teacher experience. Group classes and music camps are great for younger kids and for adding ensemble or performance experience alongside private lessons. Most students who make real progress do private weekly lessons plus daily practice at home.
What to ask a music teacher before signing up
ClassWallet / ESA status — are they approved to invoice ClassWallet, or do you need to reimburse? Studio policy — makeup lessons, cancellation, and monthly billing. Recitals or performance opportunities — twice-yearly recitals are standard for progress. Method or curriculum — Suzuki, Faber, Alfred, Royal Conservatory, or teacher-designed. Practice expectations — a good teacher sets weekly practice goals, not just show-up-and-play. Faith alignment — if worship music or Christian pedagogy matters, ask directly.
Frequently asked questions
- Does Arizona ESA cover music lessons?
- Yes. Private music lessons — piano, guitar, voice, strings, drums, and more — are one of the most commonly reimbursed enrichment expenses. The teacher or studio typically needs to be a ClassWallet vendor. See our ESA music lessons guide for details.
- What's the best age to start music lessons?
- Piano, violin, and ukulele can start as early as age 5–6. Guitar usually works from age 7–8 once hand size is sufficient. Voice lessons typically start around age 8–10. Drums and band instruments are commonly started in the 8–12 range.
- How much do private music lessons cost in Arizona?
- Most Arizona private music teachers charge $30–$80 per lesson, with $40–$60 being typical for a 30-minute weekly lesson. Studio lessons and highly credentialed teachers often sit at the top of that range.
- Are online music lessons any good?
- For piano, voice, guitar, and music theory, online lessons work well once a student is past the very beginning stages. Strings and wind instruments generally do best in person because posture and physical setup matter more.
- How do I know if a music teacher is ClassWallet approved?
- Ask directly — most teachers will tell you their vendor status up front. On program listings here, ESA-approved teachers are flagged when they've confirmed it with us.

Know the difference
Homeschooling and ESA-funded education are not the same thing
Under Arizona law these are two distinct pathways with different rules. We label every listing with the pathway it primarily serves so you know what you're signing up for.
Homeschooling (ARS §15-802)
Parent files an Affidavit of Intent. No public funds. Parent picks any curriculum and keeps full control. Co-ops, tutors, and enrichment are paid out of pocket.
ESA-funded education
Family signs the ESA contract and the affidavit is withdrawn. Quarterly funds flow through ClassWallet, expenses must fit ADE's allowable list, and receipts are required. Legally not homeschooling.
